Maia Estate

Stay on a beautiful biodynamic vineyard with the owners, a wonderful Italian family. They offer you a unique experience in their four bedroom farmhouse.

Tuscany Villas- The Maia Estate and the surrounding lands once belonged to the Castle of Trevinano. The Maia Estate used to host a cattle breeding station for the local agricultural community. The farm, which dates from the 18th century, immediately reveals itself to be a special place, situated in the far north of the unspoiled Alta Tuscia area, at the crossroads where Lazio meets the green of Umbria and the charm of Tuscany.

Spend your day immersed in the landscape: unforgettable sunsets, the green of untouched forests and countryside on the edges of the Monte Rufeno nature reserve (http://www.riservamonterufeno.it) and just a few kilometers from the renowned San Casciano dei Bagni hot springs, surrounded by centuries of culture and the ever-changing colors of the seasons. For a while, our home becomes your home.

How can you really enjoy a holiday that doesn’t include good food? Our passion for continuously investigating an area that brings together the best traditions of the three regions will surprise you. Top quality raw materials, forgotten flavors, and genuine products selected to enjoy in summer under the portico and in the winter in front of a warm fire.

Hearty breakfasts with fine cakes and homemade jams will give you the energy to face all the pleasures of the day.

Our guests enjoy one meal by Iside and Romano, the chefs from the nearby Michelin-starred “La Parolina” restaurant (www.laparolina.it), part of the Jeunes Restaurateurs d’Europe (French-based organization that admits only the best of the best “young chefs”). The cuisine, characterized by great attention to ingredients, great skill, and great imagination, can be enjoyed at certain times in this stylish restaurant, or in the coziness of our farmhouse.

We also organize selected tasting sessions, featuring our wines, jams, home-baked bread, and the finest local cheeses and salamis.

This is a truly unique opportunity to combine your trip with a gastronomic journey of endless subtleties.

The vineyard, which sits on unspoiled land at an altitude of 600 meters/2000 ft. (with the red grape varieties facing south-west and the white grape varieties facing north), is the result of a rigorous massal selection. No chemical fertilizers are used, and the soil (with a sand matrix and rich in clay, calcareous and sandstone marl mainly composed of quartz granules) is nourished using mixed flower green manure and biodynamic preparations. Weed control and most of the work in the vineyard is carried out by hand. The wine is fermented without the use of additives, in our own small wine cellar, where it is then bottled without filtering. No additional treatments are used to alter the natural composition of the three wines.

The farm is actually located in northern Lazio where it meets Tuscany and Umbria, resulting in an oasis of peace and rare beauty, only a short walk to the small medieval village of Trevinano.

As the crow flies, the border with the neighboring regions is just a few hundred meters: Lazio, Umbria, and Tuscany create a triangle of age-old charm.

For a long time, the history of Trevinano was inextricably linked to the aristocracy of Orvieto (hilltop Italian village; 35 minutes away, not to be missed) that owned it for centuries. After nearly 300 years ruling over the territory, in 1327 the Visconti of Campiglia was succeeded by the Monaldeschi della Cervara, who remained until 1592 when their lands were seized because Pope Clement VIII accused them of having harbored rebels and bandits.

Trevinano and its lands were divided between the Apostolic Camera, Cardinal Simoncelli, bishop of Orvieto, and the heirs of the Monaldeschi della Cervara family. In 1687, the Apostolic Camera united the whole territory, giving it in fief to the Marquis Bourbon del Monte. In 1910 the last direct descendant of the Bourbon del Monte family married Prince Paolo Boncompagni Ludovisi, and the family still owns Trevinano Castle and some neighboring estates.

Thanks to its geographical location and the fact that much of the land surrounding the Italian village is protected, Trevinano has remained untouched to this day. The lovely town was built on a hill called the “Balza” and nestles around the castle.

The surrounding area is of great natural interest. Adjacent is the Natural Reserve of Monte Rufeno, about 3000 acres of oak and Mediterranean macchia, where you may encounter wild boar, deer, porcupine, foxes and many other protected species.

Trevinano is found in the province of Viterbo, near the town of Acquapendente, once an important staging post on the pilgrim route along the Via Francigena, at a time when the Via Cassia was the main link between Rome and the rest of the known world.

In the hills that roll gently down towards the Val d’Orcia, surrounded by splendid countryside that has been revitalizing generations since ancient times, the Thermal Baths of San Casciano dei Bagni (Siena) are about 7 km from our Italian villa.

Our guests wishing to submerge themselves in the superb thermal waters (rich in calcium, sulfur, and magnesium), which spring at a temperature of 42°, are entitled to a special price deal at the Fonteverde Tuscan Resort & Spa wellness center (http://www.fonteverdespa.com/).  In addition to daily entry to the thermal pools (reduced by 15% for our guests), the Fonteverde offer includes treatment or relaxation programs, specific and Oriental massages, thermal mud and inhalation therapy.
